The
Northeast Regional Education Cooperative, (NEREC) proposes
to continue the current scope of work and expand assistance
to the schools identified by the NMPED-SEB that need assistance
and interventions. In the first three months of operation,
NEREC has hired a project manager and has contracted with
highly qualified consultants to identify evidence based
practices and provide services to the identified schools.
Initial activities that will continue in 2008-09 include
comprehensive needs assessments and environmental surveys
of the identified schools. Services beginning in October,
2008 will include technical assistance on developing EPSS
plans, and assistance in identifying and implementing evidence
based practices to specifically address indicators in which
they have been reported as deficient.
In
the current school year, technical assistance will begin
at the district level, working with administrators to plan
interventions, and will then be focused at the school site
level to assist teachers in implementing the identified
strategies. Training of school staff will be a critical
component of the project, and will include direct training
from SPPIP consultants and from nationally recognized trainers
at regularly held workshops sponsored as part of the project.
Some of the planned workshop themes either scheduled or
planned include RtI, Differentiated Instruction and Secondary
Literacy as it applies to students with special needs.
Additional
contractual support for this year will include two secondary
literacy specialists who will assist schools in working
with students receiving special education services in building
literacy and reading skills that from the core of academic
achievement.
As
the project proceeds, the services will be evaluated and
modified to better address individual school needs. The
project is designed with strong data collection and evaluation
systems, and a critical component will be assisting schools
in collecting, analyzing and using data to improve their
outcomes.
An
important component of the SPPIP Project is the establishment
of technology-based communications systems to enable easily
accessible training and technical assistance to the schools
located across the state. To better implement this objective,
NEREC will contract with an Information Technology Specialist
to assist in connecting schools through video-conferencing,
online communications and interactive communications technology.
NEREC will improve the transmission of information and facilitate
regular meetings through these mechanisms.
